Celeb images?

So, this is really random, but I wonder if those "crazy" celebrities have been forced to become what they are now? I saw this picture of Kesha:

And I noticed that she looked almost 'sweet'.

Maybe her "bad girl" image was forced onto her? I remember watching Lady Gaga's 'Just Dance' video, thinking that it was the strangest MV I'd ever seen..but now, comparing to her 'Born This Way' video, it's extremely normal?

So are these personas just them, which are allowed to be fully expressed when they know that people love them for "them"? Or are they just images which the media has created for them, so as to boost their popularity / fame?
